With location access set to “Always”, iOS wakes Countrail after a significant move or when you arrive at or leave a place, and the country is recorded. There is no continuous GPS, so battery use stays low. iOS does not guarantee a reading every day; days without one are shown for you to check.
Without it, iOS does not wake the app while it is closed, and days would be missed. You can use manual trips and Photos without any location access.
Free: trips by hand, the journal, counts by country, Schengen, the full journal as CSV, backups, and the first 3 trips from Photos. Pro: automatic recording (with a 14-day free trial), the 4th and later trips from Photos, and the summary for a chosen period. Pro is a yearly or monthly subscription, or a one-time purchase.
In iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or from “Manage subscriptions” in the app's Pro screen. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the period. Your recorded history stays yours: without Pro you can still view, correct and export it.
Open Countrail Pro in the app and tap “Restore purchases” while signed in with the same Apple ID.
Menu → Backup → Save a backup, keep the file in Files or iCloud Drive, then on the new iPhone choose “Restore from a backup…”. The previous journal is kept inside the app, and you can return to it from the same screen.
No. Countrail counts days present in each country (any part of a day counts) and Schengen days within 180 days. It is a journal kept by you, not an official record and not tax or immigration advice.
